How to Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Your Dog

February 10, 2025

Valentine’s Day is traditionally about romantic love, but why not broaden the definition? Love comes in many forms, and for dog lovers, our pups are definitely included in the celebration! Whether you’re spending the day with a significant other or flying solo, here are some fun and thoughtful ways to make Valentine’s Day special for your furry best friend.

1. Make Special Treats

Homemade treats are a great way to show your dog some love. There are plenty of easy, healthy recipes online. One of my favorite sites offers simple ingredient lists and dog-safe options – I think I’ll be making these Cake Pops from SpoiledHounds.com. Consider making extra to package up and deliver to your dog’s best friends in the neighborhood. Sharing the love is always in season!

2. Go for an Extra-Long Walk or Hike

Dogs love adventure, and what better way to celebrate than exploring somewhere new? Find a scenic trail or park you’ve never been to before and let your pup take in all the new smells. Not only is it a fun experience for your dog, but it’s also a great way to spend time together.

3. Pick Out a New Toy Together

Visit your favorite local pet shop and let your dog help pick out a special Valentine’s Day gift. Watching their excitement as they sniff through the options is part of the fun! Bonus points if you choose a festive, heart-shaped toy.

4. Create a Custom Portrait of Your Dog

If you’re feeling artsy, consider taking a pet portrait painting class. Many studios offer guided classes where you can paint your pup with step-by-step instructions. There are a number of options and variety in the Denver and Colorado Springs area.

5. Make a Special Dinner

A home-cooked meal can be a wonderful way to spoil your pup. Slow-roasted chicken or pork with cooked carrots is one of my dog’s favorite meal toppers. Just be sure to avoid ingredients that are harmful to dogs, like onions, garlic, and excessive salt.

6. Have a Cozy Movie Night

Snuggle up with your dog and watch a pet-friendly movie. Classics like Homeward Bound, Beethoven, or even Lady and the Tramp can make for a perfect night in. Don’t forget the blankets and some dog-friendly popcorn (plain, air-popped, no butter or salt)!

7. Schedule a Spa Day

Give your pup a relaxing at-home spa experience with a gentle brushing session, a warm bath, and maybe even a dog-friendly massage. If they’re not a fan of baths, a new bandana or festive collar can make them feel extra special.

8. Plan a Playdate

If your dog has a best friend, why not organize a Valentine’s playdate? Head to the park, a dog-friendly café, or even host a mini party at home with treats and toys.

9. Capture the Moment with a Photo Session

Since our dogs are such an important part of our lives, why not document the love you share? A mini Valentine’s-themed photo session (even if it’s just with your phone) can be a great way to cherish the memories. If you want something extra special, hire a professional pet photographer (me!) to help capture that bond beautifully. Learn more about sessions.

No matter how you choose to celebrate, Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to shower your pup with love and appreciation. What are your plans for the holiday? Let me know how you’re making it special for your four-legged Valentine!
