Let’s just say this upfront: being a Dog Mom is a real thing. And as of 2018, it’s also a real holiday. National Dog Mom’s Day is officially celebrated on the second Saturday in May—so yes, today is our day!

Dig, the dog person’s dating app, actually petitioned for it to be recognized as an official national holiday. Their reasoning? Dog moms are doing the work—caring, loving, nurturing, and cleaning up way more fur than anyone talks about—and deserve a little extra appreciation.
This came up in the most random but delightful way yesterday at the bank. The teller asked if I had anyone who’d be spoiling me for Mother’s Day. There was a beat of silence after I said I didn’t have kids. But then I smiled and said, “I am a Dog Mom—and Saturday is National Dog Mom’s Day!” His eyes lit up, and next thing I knew, he was showing me pictures of his glorious Basset Hound. Dog people just get each other.
Now, let’s be honest—my dog Gunnar and his bestie Ellie aren’t exactly going to throw me a surprise brunch. But I might treat myself to a backyard playdate with our neighbor Doberman, Copper. Nothing brings me more joy than watching dogs run full speed with zero chill.
As a pet photographer, I spend my days celebrating the bond between dogs and their people. I see the love, the loyalty, and yes—the parenting. Being a Dog Mom means knowing your pup’s favorite toy, noticing when something’s off, and building a life that includes (and often revolves around) them.

So today, I’m raising a metaphorical glass (or let’s be honest, a treat pouch) to all the dog moms out there. Whether your dog is a couch cuddler, a mountain hiker, or a total weirdo (no shame—mine are too), I hope you do something that brings you joy today.
