For years, my wardrobe was dominated by black, with a bit of gray for variety. Black is easy to wear, versatile, and low-maintenance — what’s not to love? So, you might wonder, is it okay or should you avoid black clothing for your photoshoot?
When I had my professional corporate headshot taken in 2014, my photographer recommended that I steer clear of black for my photoshoot. My initial reaction was one of disbelief. Black was my go-to!
I eventually settled on a teal top, though I couldn’t resist layering it under a black jacket. The result? The photo didn’t turn out as well as I had hoped.

Who Looks Good in Black Clothing for Photos?
The truth is, black doesn’t flatter everyone. There’s a reason why color consultants exist — they analyze your skin tone and hair color to determine which hues complement you best. Only those with a ‘Winter’ color palette can truly pull off black and pure white for photoshoots, and even they have a range of colors that tend to photograph better.

How Black Clothing Appears in Photos
Wearing black clothing in photographs can sometimes cause skin tones to appear less vibrant and may create a dull or pale effect. Additionally, if the background features dark greens or browns, black attire might blend in, making it harder to distinguish your figure and resulting in a less defined overall appearance.

What to Wear Instead of Black Clothing for Photoshoots
Consider wearing a color that you’ve always felt good in. Earth tones and jewel tones are excellent alternatives that often photograph beautifully. For inspiration, check out my What to Wear Style Guide for photoshoots or browse my Pinterest boards for seasonal outfit ideas:
