August 5th is Work Like a Dog Day. And while not every pup is cut out for hard work (certainly not my Gunnar đ¶), some dogs take their jobs very seriously.
A few weeks ago, I had the honor of photographing Courtney and her new service dog, Camo. They were paired together by the nonprofit Paragon Service Dogs, and their bond is already extraordinary.

Courtneyâs journey hasnât been easy. Her hearing loss began in seventh grade and has steadily progressed over the years. What used to be excitingâexploring new placesâslowly turned into something she dreaded. She knew she might miss the sounds of the world around her.
Dogs have always been a source of comfort and joy for Courtney. After her last dog passed away, she reached out to Paragon. She was hoping to find not just a companion but also a partner who could help her regain the freedom she had lost.
That partner came in the form of Camo. He is full of bounding energy and ready to open doors that once felt closed. Together, Courtney and Camo are rediscovering the joy of adventure, and their connection is already inspiring to witness.

Hereâs how Courtney describes life with Camo:
âHe’s my best friend and I can’t believe how much we’ve already bonded. He’s by my side constantly and I can’t imagine life without him. He has brought me so much joy.
I knew I was in a dark place deepened by loneliness, but I could never have imagined the amount of smiles and laughter he would bring me, and in such a short time. I feel more at peace than I have in so long. He has brought me such confidence and happinessânow I’m excited to leave the house with him looking out for me when before it was something I would dread.
And to see how proud he is to come trotting to alert me when our sounds go off makes me so proud of him. A huge weight and vulnerability has been lifted from me.â
Courtneyâs story is the perfect reminder of the incredible impact working dogs can haveânot only providing support but also restoring independence, confidence, and joy.
This Work Like a Dog Day, letâs celebrate amazing pups like Camo, whose work truly changes lives.
