5 Tips to look Taller and Thinner for a Photoshoot

Many of my clients ask for tips to look taller and thinner during a photoshoot. My favorite 5 tips are below. They are easy to follow and include pictures of why they work so well!

1. Wear Dark, Solid Colors

  • Slimming Effect: Dark colors like navy, dark brown, or deep burgundy absorb light, minimizing shadows and giving a more streamlined appearance.
  • Avoid Bright Patterns: Busy prints and bold colors can draw attention to areas you may want to downplay. Stick with solids for a sleek, unified look.

2. Opt for Vertical Lines and Patterns

  • Elongating: Vertical stripes or designs create the illusion of height and draw the eye up and down, making you appear taller and slimmer, like the navy cardigan in the first picture below.
  • Avoid Horizontal Stripes: These tend to widen the frame, which can make you look broader in photos.

3. Choose Structured, Well-Fitting Clothes

  • Tailored Fit: Clothes that fit well to your body without being too tight or too loose provide a more polished and slimming appearance. Structured garments, such as blazers or well-cut dresses, give shape and define your figure.
  • Shapewear: For extra smoothing and support, consider using shapewear under fitted clothing to help create clean lines.

4. Go for High-Waisted Bottoms

  • Accentuates the Waist: High-waisted skirts, pants, or jeans define your waistline and elongate your legs, giving the illusion of a slimmer, longer body.
  • Avoid Low-Rise: Low-rise bottoms can create bulging around the waist and make you appear shorter.

5. Choose V-Necks or Open Necklines

  • Draws the Eye Upward: V-necks or open-neck tops, like scoop necks or off-the-shoulder styles, elongate the neck and upper body, making you look taller and leaner.
  • Avoid High-Necked Tops: Turtlenecks or high-collared shirts can make the neck look shorter and draw attention to the shoulders, which may make you appear broader.
